THE CHALLENGE
The incredible challenge in this case was to completely waterproof three Greek-themed swimming pools (Shotcrete) that were located on the 37th floor, 47th floor, and 57th floor directly over ‘occupied spaces’ (with no double slab to put a membrane in between).
In addition to the three swimming pool areas, there were numerous other fountains, pools, and hot tub areas on different levels, that were also located over ‘occupied spaces’. Lastly, all of the water containment tanks and roofs also needed to be waterproofed. The timing of the waterproofing application work was spread out over the course of three years, as the entire development was being constructed. The total tally for the project was 150,000 sf of pools … 200,000 sf of roofs … 160,000 sf of water containment & fountains … and 800 bathrooms.
THE SOLUTION
This project provided a very unique challenge – how to effectively waterproof large pools of water directly ‘over occupied spaces’. The long-term protection provided by the EMSS subsurface waterproofing technology used in the TechCrete 2500 Waterproofing System is exactly what the architect was looking for. Its ability to form a waterproofing gel inside the concrete matrix itself – allowed the designers to successfully suspend swimming pools 50+ stories in the air. In addition, the very fast speed-of-application provided by TC 2500 allowed the construction schedule to stay on pace, ensuring the project was completed in a timely manner.
THE RESULTS
The results have been spectacular! The amount of water that’s being effectively contained with occupied spaces directly below it is amazing. TechCrete 2500’s ability to waterproof & protect concrete surfaces for several decades in an environmentally friendly manner made it the perfect choice for this challenging project.
