THE CHALLENGE
Built in 1936, this stadium is the home of FC Modena professional soccer team. In 2010, the stadium was scheduled for some repairs and a facelift. Part of the project included finding a way to effectively protect the 74-year old concrete seating areas that completely surround the playing field – in order to extend the lifespan of the facility.
THE SOLUTION
The decision was made to remove the seats from the concrete structure, and strip away whatever material was remaining from the previous attempts to protect the concrete. Normal cleaning practices, followed by the use of an ascetic acid solution to remove any remaining materials and open the concrete pores.
The actual long-term waterproofing of the concrete was accomplished by spray-applying TechCrete 2500 Waterproofing Agent over the entire surface of the concrete in the stands. Using this unique and award-winning EMSS technology (Enzymatically Modified Sodium Silicate) to form a layer of waterproofing gel ‘below’ the surface of the concrete is allowing the stadium to be protected from weather conditions & corrosion of the steel reinforcement for many decades to come.
THE RESULTS
Once the cleaning and waterproofing had been accomplished, the entire concrete surface was covered with non-skid aesthetic coating – which could be applied without concern of delamination, since TechCrete 2500 penetrates below the surface of the concrete and does not affect the adhesive bonding of other products to the surface.
