The award-winning BridgeDECK brand of
waterproofing products was formulated by Alchemco

to provide the absolute best concrete protection solution for Highway & Railroad Bridges around the globe, regardless of the needs of any specific bridge. These products take advantage of Alchemco’s proprietary gel-forming technology to provide a fast & efficient way to effectively protect all concrete bridge surfaces (vertical, horizontal and underside).

Our BridgeDECK Waterproofing Agent won the prestigious Innovate Product Award at the 2023 World of Concrete Convention in Las Vegas in both the ‘Experts Choice’ category (voted on by a panel of experts) and the ‘Industry Choice’ category (voted on by the 60,000+ attendees of the Convention). This is actual waterproofing technology, that’s not to be confused with any penetrating sealers or water repellants you may have previous or current experience with. With a five-decade history of successfully waterproofing concrete structures of all types around the globe (bridges, water treatment plants, stadiums, airports, marinas, tunnels, dams, parking structures, etc.) this well-proven technology occupies its own category. A spray-applied waterproofing technology, that can protect concrete bridges for up to 25-years with a single application, depending on which of the BridgeDECK products is selected.

Among the many advantages of using BridgeDECK waterproofing products is the speed & ease of application with which the projects are completed with. This allows for minimal traffic disruption, because of the extremely short bridge closure times required for the projects to be completed.

All of the BridgeDECK products require only one quick & simple spray-applied application, followed by spraying the bridge surface with water. This initiates the gel-forming chemical reaction that occurs below the surface of the concrete. Our unique waterproofing gel forms inside the concrete matrix whenever one of the BridgeDECK waterproofing products comes in contact with both water and calcium hydroxide (which is already present in the concrete slab). This repeatable chemical reaction enables the gel formed by our BridgeDECK products to seal not only existing cracks, but future cracks as well. Depending on which of the BridgeDECK products is selected for use, this gel can seal ‘existing cracks’ up to 2.0 mm wide, and ‘future cracks’ up to 0.4 mm wide.

A growing number of states have been testing and using BridgeDECK products to protect their highway bridges since 2018, when Alchemco acquired the company that invented this proprietary technology almost 50 years ago. In fact, the New Jersey Department of Transportation first used this technology on several of their interstate highway bridges in 2005, and recently completed a 27-bridge project consisting of over 4 million square feet of bridge deck surface. Alchemco’s BridgeDECK products are currently participants in a long-term study being conducted as part of the AASHTO TSP-2 Innovative Technology Demonstration (ITD) Program.

Federal Highway Administration Testing

Our unique subsurface, gel-forming technology was part of an extensive 3-year study run by the U.S. Department of Transportation / Federal Highway Administration back in 1981. The study (titled: Low Cost Bridge Deck Surface Treatment) was conducted in order to provide the state D.O.T.s with some credible insight into which new product offerings actually worked, and which ones did not. It compared over 100 different concrete sealers & penetrants in a number of lab tests. Out of that large group of contenders, the top five products were chosen to take part in a 5-month field study. The final result of the study showed that the EMSS-based product performed exceptionally well, finishing either first or second in every single test that was run on this large group of potential products. At the time of the study, the name of the product using the EMSS technology was Radcon Formula 7. That trade name was changed in 2018, when the company that invented the technology was acquired by Alchemco and was rechristened as the BridgeDECK brand of concrete waterproofing products.
